Finally at the end of Concept Art Unit...apart form Evaluation....Damn Evaluations!!

I settled on a Final Design and began drawing the Orthographic for it, i had to draw the legs, arms and body separately, as most of the detail is on the body the arms and legs would have hid that and it wouldn't have been very good for modeling reference.

I dont know if you can see it on here but the body is in sections, the large tail can collapse in on itself and tuck away under the head, the head also has sections on it, the back is where all the important organs are, when it breathes the back of the head expands and shrinks just like a humans chest.
Where the sections meet each other, a venomous green ooze, it would also act as a kind of lubricant so that the "Tail" wouldn't  have any problems collapsing in on itself.

The legs and arms can also fold onto themselves as well, allowing it to hid its real size, which is about 11foot tall, with everything folded up it should be really small, making it look harmless, if its attacked, depending on its foe, it will either sit there n wait till they go away or unfold completely and show its full size to rip them limb from limb!! >:D

Antiquitas is the name i have decided to give it, its Latin and literally translates to "The Ancient One".
I wanted it to be a very very old....thing....i think its an insect, im sure anymore...
The idea was that it had been sitting dormant for a lot of years, i think i decided on...hold on ill check..
WHAT!? OVER 9000!!!?!?

. . . . .

Sorry...i couldnt help myself...

Anyway, it had been sitting there for a very long time, in a sort of hibernation state when a massive earthquake tore apart the cavern that it was in, showing a way to the surface and causing Antiquitas to awaken from his deep slumber.

Damien and I have been going on and on at each other about who's "Character" would win in a fight.
My giant, venomous, able to rend bone and tear flesh away in chunks bug, Antiquitas
Or his slightly bigger, steam powered silverback gorilla....
Obviously i said mine was better, i mean look at it!!
Sure a big gorilla is weird n creepy, but a a giant bug with hands that have blades for fingers, dripping with a weird green ooze that you dont know is venomous and acidic, along with the fact that it is blind and can still see perfectly is ever creepier!

The part about it being blind and still seeing perfectly is true, it emits a low pulsing sound, not within human hearing frequency, to detect objects around it, its basically Sonar, which Bats use.

I based the final piece on the discussions me and Damien have about our characters, obviously my bug came out on top as the winner, but like a real fight no1 comes out without damage, i used that to show how my bug became blind, its eyes have been gouged out in the fight, (the sonar was used in places without any light, but now its used all the time).
You may have seen the strange things in the background, those are the eyes of more of my bugs kind, there not blind....lucky gits...
I did that to show that my bug was not the only one of its kind and to show that by killing this one, it would not be the end of the "Bug Infestation" that was fast becoming a problem.

I fast was growing bored of the humanoid side, so i decided to try something abit more monstrous, i went back to the 4 large spiked legs as these seemed the least humanoid that i drew.
It also has 2 sets of arms now, a smaller set about halfway down the body with human like hands for grabbing and a larger pair ontop of the shoulder, these have rather large spiked pincers which act as weapons for hunting or defending itself from attackers.

I also dropped the armor and tried to focus more upon the exo-skeleton that insects have, it didnt go that well as it still looks like its wearing body armor.

In the end i just went for a complete monster, all humanoid aspects have been completely lost.
I already liked the design i had and i didn't really want to change it, but there were a few issues like: how would it grasp things, the tip of the tail, what is it for? and skin, what kind of skin would it have, so i had to do more iterating.

I didn't really know what to do, most of these are just more weapons, in fact i went a bit OTT on the 4th one, for some reason i had the urge to graft a laser cannon on its backside, but if i did that i was going into a territory i don't like, so that idea was out of the way.

The first 4 drawings on the left are basically just spikes, one of them dripping a acidic compound, i guess they would be for impaling prey or injecting venom or something.

No you are not seeing things, i did draw an eye on the end of the tail, im not sure why at all, it was just a spur of the moment thing and yes the one on the right of it IS a mouth. I didnt like that idea as soon as i drew it, perhaps it has something to do with the thought of it eating through its uhm...ass.

The top 2 on the right are basically just weapons, im not sure how the flail would work, as it would have to be rather heavy to cause some damage, but the connection to the body would have to be rather flexible to swing round, but then it would just break off and cause damage to itself...
The spiky tail was inspired by a stegosaurus, as there tail was the same, this one was most likely just for show. Im also not sure about the bottom right one, its too weird...

God! The claws were the most aggravating thing to concept ever!
It was just the same thing over and over, i wanted to keep the pincers for there crushing power, so i pretty much just tried aesthetics designs, adding crystals that are growing out of the "skin". I tried to venture away from pincers a few times, the 2nd on top row is like a scythe blade and would just tear flesh from bone. The middle bottom is just a spike, made for impaling and causes lethal damage fast.

I decided to go with bottom right, its 4 fingers which are pretty much blades, they allow for grabbing, although they cant bend like normal fingers. There also super sharp! A slash from that hand would probably leave a large groove in your bone, if not go straight through and take the limb off.

OMG! I really cant get into the habit of blogging!!

It's been about 5-6 weeks since we first started the "Character Development" unit and its not like i haven't had the time, because i've had a fair bit of time free, but i just cannot get into the habit of blogging my work...gonna have to work on that...

=( This is gonna be a rather BIG post i think...

*sigh*

After starting the "Character Development" unit officially i decided i wasn't going to carry on making a werewolf, i wanted something a bit more original, something i haven't seen alot of times and something i haven't attempted before..
So that threw humans out the window...well...almost...

I wanted to do something more bug like as i had never even thought of attempting this so i started drawing simple sketches, just lines n circles for joints...

It was at first going to be female, but after somebody's comments about adding 14 pairs of boobs...lol
I decided it may be best to make it male with in mind i started to draw a few "basic" iterations, none of them were highly detailed, in fact they didn't have faces...but i was planning to do that bit a little later on as a separate thing.

I only did about 4 -5 pages on it, the last page has more monstrous designs, they lost all humanoid likeness to them, this wasnt planned...it just happened as i was going.

I wasnt really into the unit at this point so i didnt really care for detail, but the basic's were there for me...

In this i tried to keep the lower half more bug-like, the first ones has humanoid hand, allowing it to grasp things liek tools or weaponry, it also has large spike like legs, they extend upwards from the body and connect to a big spike like foot.
The second one has more crab like pincers, im not sure why to be honest, just a change...crabs aren't even insects either....what was going through my head?, to contradict the strange hands, i studied spider legs and used those.

The second page...
Uhm...yehh....i didnt like either of these designs at all...
I went for a more centipede like body, multi sectioned, flat, long and short legs.
The first one is pretty much the same as the 1st one on the last page, except it now has small spiked feel and another connection, it also has 2 more feet on the front. The hands are still humanoid except they now only have 3 fingers instead of 4, the fingers also end as claws rather than a hand.

The second drawing  has 8 very short and armor plated legs, i dont know why i made them armor plated, i guess it was because i was thinking about a bugs exo-skeleton. The hands turned into some strange kind of graspers, they have 1 big finger and 1 small thumb....i dont know what on earth that is going to achieve.

Third page....
By now you will have noticed that i only do 2 drawings per page...i cant draw small images...im just physically incapable of doing it.

Right, drawing 1, i went back to the spider like legs for this 1, as well as the crab claws, this time it has 3 sets of legs instead of 2, making its limbs total to 8, which is alot more spider like. I went back to the pincers as they have the ability to grasp and crush anything they need to.

Drawing 2, 3 sets of legs all spider like with rather small spikes for feet, the arms arm pretty much the same as the legs, this allows it to run with all 8 limbs at fast speed, while still being able to use the arms to skewer food or impale foes.

The 4th page has the more monstrous designs on it, to be honest om not sure where my inspiration came from for these designs, i think the Widowmaker from Resistance: Fall of Man had a fair bit to do with the designs. The second drawing  looks a fair bit like it, the first drawing reminds me alot of an ant for some reason.
Still not sure why....

Head concepts! Oh my god...it was hard to come up with head designs...
I wanted to stay along the humanoid theme but still have alot of monster in it...

Im sure the inspiration for the first head came from the Star Wars creature known as the Acklay, i really liked this head and was going to use it, but it was pointed out to me that it looks alot like the head used on the Spider Alien thing from one of the Christmas Doctor Who episodes. So suffice to say i didnt use it...

I ended up going with the head on the bottom left, it kept a humanoid shape while still having features of a bug, it also has hair which if we had to do a backstory to the character would have helped with an idea of it being a mutated human (Not Spider-man!!).

I decided to go with drawing 2 on page 3 of the body designs but i changed the hands from being more feet to actual hands, the middle drawing is my favourite out of the 3, it seemed to me to be the one i could work with the most. After a bit of thought and help i decided that it should be a warrior, much like a Roman Centurian.
When i decided this i started looking into armours...

The higher ranking officers in the Roman army, acording to some historical documents, wore bigger flashier armor than the foot soldiers to distinguish them, to show that they are to be followed without question. The idea was that my spider centaur thing was a high ranking officer in the army, something went wrong and he...it.....my character had to do the typical thing of sort out some big mess, defeat a big boss and go back to everyday life as if nothing had ever happened.....

This was the design i was going to go with for armor, a chain mail underneath with plate mail armor cloth for the material around the bottom, for the shoulders i was thinking about maybe some form of extremly hard yet light and durable metal, i would have come to a decision on this but i ended up changing my character....i decided to drop the armor and make it more of a monster, i did a few more head sketches to see if there was any other head i could come up with.

I did manage to come up with a fair few monstrous facial designs, i especially liked the head in the middle with the big fangs, i wanted to try and lose near enough all aspects of humanoid features, i wanted to create less of a humanoid creature and more like something out of a horror film that would be "fun" to run into in a dark alley.

Delivery on 3rd post of the 3-for-1 deal was slightly delayed. We appologise for any inconvenience.

Finally onto character concept! =D

Before we even started this i already knew what type of character i wanted to do, i wanted it to be something I've never designed before, so that threw full human out of the window, it also worked well with the Human-Animal comparison we was recently doing.
What is it i hear you ask? Simple!! A Werewolf  : D

No this does not mean i am a "Team Jacob" fan, i swear those films ruined Werewolves, Vampires were always gay shiny people,..Besides...I'm a fan of "Team Guy Who Nearly Hit Bella With A Van" :D

Right....Back on topic i think...

First thing i did was find out about there posture, what they keep from there wolf counterparts when they become bipedal. Apart from the obvious Fur, Tail, Fangs and Claws, they also keep there strange way of standing, they stand on there tip-toes with the base of the foot off the floor, it may be to make themselves seem bigger or maybe they just cant walk any other way.
Sorry if you cant see it all that well...

Before i dove further into the design, i started with some basic practice of the mass, like i did with the human. This one was more fun though as i was able to draw poses that human just would not do without being diagnosed mentally ill.

From what i could tell, a Werewolf has an extremely large chest mass compared to its waist or head, this may be something they inherited from there wolf side.
When i realized this i started to look at how there skeleton was structured, i did a side on view of the entire skeleton, never got round to doing a front view, i also did a close up comparison of the differences between a Wolf skull and a Human skull.
(From here on the work was done on Photoshop.)

After the Skeleton comes the Muscles, this was surprisingly easy to do, i mostly used human reference but added more wolf like muscle's to where i thought needed, to allow easy movement in either bipedal or quadrupedal stances.

Third Post! Im doing a 3 for 1 special offer today :)

After the Human Skeleton we started drawing animal ones, but avoiding things like insects and reptiles.
This was to show us how similar the skeletal structure is on most animals and humans :)

To start of this i went straight to my favorite animal ever...
The mighty Wolf :)

Unfortunately i don't believe i did him justice, so i will defiantly be re-visiting this animal in the future, i might go to the zoo n do some quick sketches of them too :)
But the next animal i did drawings of was another Mammal :)

The Saber-Tooth Walrus!! xD
I had alot of fun on this one for sum reason and i feel i did quiet well on it too.

I did a full skeleton for this animal as it looks really interesting to draw, i started with a biped of the major masses, the chest, hip, skull and lines to show where the arms and spine are.

I also did a close up of the Skull, which i have to say im rather proud of :)

Finaly! A Second Post!!! OMG!!

This is a long time after i should have made another post but events in the last few weeks did not allow me the time :(

Well...i wont spam the page with all the ink drawings we did, ill do that at a later date :D
About a week or two ago we started looking at the Human Skeleton, so i did a few close up drawings of some of the join:-

On Left - Hinge Joint, Found in the Elbow and Knee (Technically so is the wrist but its more complicated and i don't want to get into that now.)
On Right - Ball and Socket Joint, Found in the Shoulder and Hip.
Bottom is a close up of the Shoulder Ball and Socket Joint when viewed from behind a person, i also included the Scapula.

After this i did some drawings of a few muscles :-

I did the Front and Back of the arm, in which i identified the Bicep and Tricep,
I also did a close up of the Back muscles and Arm, I was able to identify the:
Trapizius -  Which is located where your shoulder meets your neck.
Deltoid - Located at the top of your arm and around the Ball and Socket Joint in your shoulder.
Tricep - Located on the back of your arm.
Infraspinatus - Located around your armpit, it connects the back and front muscles.

I was also told to do some biped poses, which would help me develop a mental biped so i would be able to see how a body is in any poses without having to search the internet for the exact pose i want. :)

Yeh!! 1st post!

Ok...i made this blog so i could show my work to whoever wants to see it.
Also so i can get advice on how to improve my 3D Art work, Concept Work and 3D Models. :]
